 Speakers & Session Descriptions

Topic: Is Philanthropy Under Threat?

Inflation is raging. The pool of donors is shrinking. Donors are aging, and the competition for the charitable dollar is tougher than ever.  Is philanthropy in Canada under threat?  Well, yes, but within the storm clouds there are bright silver linings.  Join Malcolm for his annual Love of Gift Planning update on gift planning trends, opportunities, and the importance of making strategic choices.

Malcolm Burrows, Head, Philanthropic Advisory Services, Scotia Wealth Management

Malcolm is a philanthropic advisor and gift planner with 32 years of experience. He is Head, Philanthropic Advisory Services at Scotia Wealth Management.  He founded and leads Aqueduct Foundation, a public foundation with donor advised funds.  Aqueduct Foundation is the 13th largest foundation in Canada by assets and has granted $750 million to registered charities since inception in 2006.  He also leads Scotia Wealth Management’s 100-year-old private foundation services practice.  He worked for three major Toronto charities from 1990 to 2004.

Malcolm is an active educator, writer, and volunteer in the charitable sector. Through the Canadian Association of Gift Planners, he has contributed to the development of new charitable tax incentives, including the elimination of capital gains on gifts of public securities and the “estate donation” rules.  His proposal for gifts of private securities and taxable real estate published by C.D. Howe Institute was included in the 2015 Federal Budget.  He was CAGP’s course director from 1999 to 2011.

In his volunteer life, he is a director of the Muttart Foundation and Canada Helps, and a member of the Indigenous and Canadian Curatorial Committee at the Art Gallery of Ontario.  Previously, he served on CRA’s Charities Directorate Technical Issues Working Group, was Co-Editor of The Philanthropist, and a board member of both the Canadian and Spanish sections of Doctors Without Borders (MSF).

Topic: Traditional to Transformational: Leveraging the Power of Digital Marketing

In recent years, the University of Toronto’s Gift Planning portfolio has undergone a digital transformation. Rather than exclusively relying on traditional channels, we are now fully leveraging the power of integrated multi-channel marketing and communications to build awareness of and raise interest in gift planning as a meaningful way to make a difference. During this session, we will discuss how to diversify your channel mix, maximize your content, leverage data-informed insights to guide decision making, and generate qualified leads using paid digital advertising. We’ll also share best practices, successes, and key learnings to help guide your own planning efforts.

Michelle Osborne, CFRE, Executive Director, University of Toronto

Michelle has spent her career within the field of strategic gift planning. Since 2007, she has worked in Advancement at the University of Toronto. As Executive Director, Gift Planning, she oversees the University’s Gift Planning Program, where she and her team work closely with alumni, friends and their advisors to structure legacy gifts that will build a world that is healthy, sustainable and inclusive for generations to come. Having worked for the Royal Ontario Museum Governors and SickKids Foundation, she has been privileged to have dedicated her fundraising career to helping donors achieve their dreams. A U of T alumna, Michelle is a Certified Fund Raising Executive (CFRE) and a long-standing dedicated member of the Canadian Association of Gift Planners. In addition to being Past Chair, CAGP Board, she is faculty member of CAGP’s courses. Michelle was the inaugural recipient of the Jasmine Sweatman Award in 2005—a CAGP Toronto Chapter award for outstanding commitment to Gift Planning and in 2015, received the Friend of CAGP Award—CAGP’s National award for individuals who embody the spirit and vision of CAGP.

Melissa Pang, Associate Director, Digital Marketing & Communications, University of Toronto

Melissa is the Associate Director of Digital Marketing & Communications at the University of Toronto, where she oversees and consults on a wide array of the university's digital initiatives. Her focus is on making digital experiences intuitive, compelling and effective. Melissa has over 15 years of experience driving high performance on digital, previously serving advertising and design agencies with a focus on non-profit clients. Her work has won multiple RGD Design Awards and an IABC Gold Quill Award of Merit. She is also an advocate for inclusivity, accessibility, and using digital for the public good.

Topic: Growing Legacy Giving through an Amazing Donor Experience

Nothing impacts our ability to engage people in legacy giving more than the experience they have with our entire organization. In other words, the donor experience really matters! In this fast paced session, Kimberley will share the latest trends and insights impacting legacy giving and demonstrate what elements of the donor experience truly drive legacy engagement.  Most importantly, we will discuss how you can utilize these tools to further engage donors and inspire them to take action.  She will also share some fascinating audience insights that you will be able to apply to your own programs in order to think differently about how legacy fits into the mix (thinking outside of the traditional prospects for legacy giving!).

Kimberley Blease, EVP, Strategic Solutions & Consulting, Blakely Inc.

When it comes to building high-value donor relationships, Kimberley’s original thinking is unparalleled. With over 38 years of experience, Kimberley is a fundraiser and marketer, and sought after speaker on the topics of high value giving, planned giving, legacy and trends in the sector. As EVP Strategic Solutions at Blakely Inc. she brings vision and leadership to the organization, and her passion for high value donor development has led to the creation of numerous new products and solutions for the sector, and most recently, the launch of Blakely’s thought leadership platform – The Exchange Hub.
