The How (and WHY) of Supporting Non-Qualified Donees

Presenters:
Aneil Gokhale, Toronto FoundationMohamed Huque, Toronto Foundation; Heather Keachie, Gardiner Roberts LLP

After years of advocacy from the nonprofit and charitable sector, the federal government has now enabled foundations and charitable organizations to make grants directly non-qualified donees (NQDs). While this is a welcome change, many registered charities are still wary of granting to NQDs, unfamiliar with the new regulatory framework and uncertain what the administrative burden will be if they want to take advantage of this new option. Foundations particularly may have limited experience engaging with NDQs directly. But supporting NQDs is critical from an equity perspective: these are organizations often least resourced and closest to the challenges they're facing. Learn from a funder and charitable lawyer on how and why the new laws present an opportunity to make greater impacts in the charitable sector.
